JEFFERSON COUNTY EDUCATOR ARRESTED ON CHILD PORN, SEX WITH STUDENT CHARGES

A longtime Jefferson County educator is behind bars in Tuscaloosa today, facing charges of possessing child pornography and of having sex with a student.

Brett William Kirkham, who has worked with the Jefferson County School System since 2000, was accused on June 16 of being sexually involved with a juvenile in Tuscaloosa. The person who complained said the relationship had been ongoing for about three years.

Kirkham, who is currently Jefferson County Schools’ human resources director, was placed on administrative leave after the allegations surfaced.

Tuscaloosa Police said multiple agencies, including the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Hueytown Police Department and several Jefferson County law enforcement agencies obtained warrants to search Kirkham’s Tuscaloosa home and Jefferson County office. Police seized electronic devices from both locations, and police said they recovered several illicit images from those devices.

Kirkham was charged with being a school employee having sex with a student younger than 19 and unlawful possession and possession with the intent to disseminate child pornography.

He is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $22,500 bond, with a hold for the Hueytown Police Department, where he is also facing charges of being a school employee having sex with a student younger than 19.

Police said more charges may be pending.
