The Alabama gymnastics season is in full swing, and Wednesday evening coach Dana Duckworth and mascot big Al took over the Winn-Dixie grocery store on McFarland Boulevard. Winn-Dixie is sponsoring the meet this Friday against Boise State, and they donated 1,000 tickets to young gymnasts in the community.
“At Winn-Dixie we always try our very best to give back to the community, and this is one of the ways we see fit to do so,” said Eugene Okorlei, a representative for Winn-Dixie.
Head coach Dana Duckworth knows it’s important for kids to maintain a healthy lifestyle while also having fun doing it. She spoke to the kids who showed up at Winn-Dixie Wednesday night.
“There are a lot of beautiful gymnasts here tonight and they aspire to become the same type of athletes our women are. So one they have to do well academically, two they have to fuel well to become strong, and number three they need to be athletic and have fun doing what they love, which is gymnastics,” Duckworth said.
Alabama gymnastics will take on Boise State Friday Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Olympic medalist Nastia Lukin will be in attendance, and signing autographs before the meet.
